This is the package for first-time visitors and families who want to see everything — every way to be on the Alleppey backwaters, in one day. Start at dawn on the narrow village canals by kayak, cross Vembanad Lake by speedboat, spend six hours on a traditional Kerala houseboat with lunch served on the water, canoe through the quiet village channels in the afternoon, and end with the sun dropping into the Arabian Sea at Alleppey beach. No overnight stay required for the houseboat cruise.

The Complete Alleppey Backwater Day

Most Alleppey day tours give you one or two activities — a Shikara ride, or a quick kayak session, then a hotel recommendation and you're on your own. The Backwaters Day Out is the opposite: five distinct water experiences across thirteen hours, from the quietest hour on the canals to the last light over the sea. The houseboat day cruise is the element that sets this package apart — six hours on a kettuvallam without needing to book an overnight stay.

1

Houseboat day cruise — no overnight required

The most common question we get: "Can I experience a houseboat without staying overnight?" The answer here is yes — 11am to 5pm on a traditional Kerala kettuvallam, with lunch cooked and served on board, is the full houseboat experience in a single day.

2

Five water activities — every way to see Alleppey

Kayak, speedboat, houseboat, canoe, beach. Each one covers a different aspect of the backwater system — from the narrowest village channel accessible only by kayak, to the wide open expanse of Vembanad Lake by speedboat. Together they give you the full picture.

3

6am start — the best hour on the backwaters

The Punnamada canals at 6am are extraordinary. Mist on the water, complete quiet, kingfishers, the first country boats of the morning. By 8am the houseboats start their engines. The early start is the reason the kayaking section is so good.

4

The best package for families

The calm morning canals for kayaking and canoeing, the stable and comfortable houseboat for the main part of the day, and the beach to end with — this structure works particularly well for families with younger children who need variety across a long day.

5

NIWS-certified guide throughout

Rahul the Guide and team are certified by the National Institute of Watersports, Goa. Full safety briefing, life jackets for all water activities, and your guide alongside you for every activity from 6am to the beach. No prior experience needed for any activity.

Full Day Itinerary

Thirteen hours, five water experiences, one beach sunset. Every element is timed to the best version of itself.

6:00am

Kayaking — Punnamada village canals

The day begins on the water at 6am — the best hour on the Alleppey backwaters. Kayak through the narrow village channels of Punnamada while the lake is still, the mist is still low and the kingfishers are still active. Safety briefing and life jackets before you get in. NIWS-certified guide leads. No experience needed — most guests are paddling confidently within minutes. The canals here are inaccessible to houseboats and larger boats; this is the version of Alleppey that exists before the tourist traffic begins.

Morning

Speedboat — Vembanad Lake

After the quiet intimacy of the kayak canals, the speedboat is a deliberate contrast — fast, open water, the full scale of Vembanad Lake visible in every direction. At over 2,000 square kilometres, Vembanad is Kerala's largest inland lake and one of the largest in India. Crossing it by speedboat puts its size in perspective in a way that no other activity does.

Morning

Canoeing — village waterways

A canoe through the shaded village channels before the houseboat cruise begins. The canoe sits lower in the water than a kayak, moves slower, and passes closer to the banks. You hear the village: a radio, women washing clothes on the canal steps, children on a school boat. A completely different texture from the speedboat crossing — the backwaters at a human pace.

11am – 5pm

Houseboat day cruise — Kerala lunch on board

Six hours on a traditional Kerala kettuvallam — the iconic bamboo and teak houseboat that Alleppey is known for. The boat has a covered deck, comfortable seating, a kitchen and a crew. The cruise moves through the open backwaters and wider canals at a slow, deliberate pace. Lunch is cooked and served on board — traditional Kerala fish curry, karimeen, rice, coconut-based side dishes. No overnight stay required: this is the full houseboat experience in a single afternoon.

Evening

Alleppey beach — Arabian Sea sunset

The day ends at Alleppey beach — a long stretch of sand on the Arabian Sea coast at the edge of the town. The beach faces due west, which means the sunset is direct: the sky turns orange and pink over the open sea as the fishing boats come back in. Walk, swim, or sit. Return by 7pm.

Houseboat Day Cruise — No Overnight Stay Needed

Alleppey Houseboat — traditional Kerala kettuvallam on the backwaters

11am – 5pm · Included in this package

Kerala lunch, served on the houseboat

A kettuvallam is a traditional Kerala houseboat — hand-built from bamboo and teak, sealed with coir and fish oil, wide enough for a proper deck, a kitchen, sleeping quarters and dining area. For the day cruise, you have the boat and crew from 11am to 5pm. Lunch is cooked on board: karimeen (pearl spot fish) curry or fry, steamed rice, coconut-based thoran, rasam and a sweet to finish. Six hours on the water, no hotel check-in, no overnight baggage — just the full houseboat experience in a single day.

11am – 5pm Kerala fish curry Karimeen fry Rice & thoran No overnight needed Open deck

A houseboat (kettuvallam) is fundamentally different from a Shikara or a speedboat — larger, slower, with a full crew and kitchen. The day cruise option is the most common question we receive from travellers with only one day in Alleppey: yes, you can experience a houseboat fully without staying overnight, and this is the package that makes it happen.

Five Activities, One Day

Each activity uses a different waterway and a different mode — from the narrowest canal to the open sea. Together they cover the full geography and texture of the Alleppey backwaters.

1

Kayaking — Punnamada Village Canals

The most intimate way to experience the backwaters — a solo or tandem kayak through the narrow channels of Punnamada at 6am. Passages so tight that only kayaks and canoes can pass. Coconut palms lean over the water, local fishermen cast nets at dawn, the canal surface reflects the early sky. NIWS-certified guide leads throughout, life jackets provided, no experience needed. This is the hour and the place that defines why early morning on the Alleppey backwaters is unlike anywhere else in Kerala.

2

Speedboat — Vembanad Lake

A speedboat crossing of Vembanad Lake — fast, wide open, the horizon in every direction. Vembanad is Kerala's largest lake and one of the longest in India; the speedboat is the only way to feel its full scale. The deliberate contrast after the slow intimacy of the kayak canals. Most groups respond to the speed instinctively — it is a different kind of exhilaration from everything else in the day.

3

Houseboat Day Cruise — 11am to 5pm

The centrepiece of the day. A traditional Kerala kettuvallam from 11am to 5pm — six hours on the backwaters with a full crew and Kerala lunch served on board. The houseboat moves through the open backwaters and wider canals at a pace that lets you sit, eat, photograph and simply watch the landscape pass. Paddy fields, coconut groves, fishing villages, water birds, the occasional snake boat. No overnight stay required — the full houseboat experience in a single afternoon.

4

Canoeing — Village Waterways

A canoe through the shaded village channels before the houseboat cruise. Lower in the water than a kayak, slower, quieter. The banks pass close by — close enough to see the moss on the canal walls, the roots of the coconut palms growing into the water, the household details of life in a backwater village. After the speedboat, the canoe is the deliberate deceleration before six hours on the houseboat.

5

Alleppey Beach — Arabian Sea Sunset

The day ends at the sea. Alleppey beach is a long stretch of sand on the Arabian Sea at the western edge of the town — accessible, wide, facing due west for a direct unobstructed sunset. After a full day on inland water, the transition to open ocean is dramatic. Walk, swim, or sit and watch the fishing boats come back in as the light changes. Return by 7pm.

Alleppey Beach — Arabian Sea Sunset

Direct West · Arabian Sea Sunsets

Alleppey Beach

Alleppey beach stretches along the western edge of the town — long, wide, and facing directly into the setting sun. It is more accessible and better known than Mararikulam beach, sitting within easy reach of the town centre. The beach is a working coastline: fishing boats are pulled up on the sand, nets are spread out to dry, and the lighthouse at the south end of the beach marks the point where the backwater canals meet the open sea.

After a full day on the backwaters — all inland water, enclosed canals and lake — arriving at the open Arabian Sea gives the day a clean ending. The sky turns colour at dusk. The fishing boats that went out before dawn come back in as the light goes amber. It is a natural conclusion to thirteen hours on the water.

Rahul grew up in Thathampally — in the Kallupurackal Nehru Trophy Ward, on the stretch of Punnamada Lake where the famous snake boat race is held every August. The 6am canal route in the kayak section is one he has paddled hundreds of times. He knows where the kingfishers nest, which village family has the best landing steps, and which stretch of water catches the morning mist the longest.

The NIWS certification — from the National Institute of Watersports in Goa, the same institution that trains the Indian Coast Guard — came later. The local knowledge was always there. Every safety briefing is taken seriously. Life jackets are non-negotiable. And the day is guided personally, from the first kayak stroke at 6am to the beach at sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — this is the most common question we receive about this package. The houseboat day cruise runs from 11am to 5pm and is a full kettuvallam experience without requiring an overnight stay. You get the boat, the crew, the Kerala lunch on board, and six hours on the open backwaters. No hotel check-in, no overnight bags — just the full houseboat experience in a single afternoon.
The Backwaters Day Out includes a houseboat day cruise (11am–5pm) as the main experience. Breakfast is not included separately — lunch is served on the houseboat. The beach destination is Alleppey beach. The Affordable Day Out replaces the houseboat with a Shikara + Kerala lunch and includes a separate waterfront breakfast, with Mararikulam as the beach. Choose this package if the houseboat experience is your priority. Choose the Affordable Day Out if meals included from the start and Mararikulam beach are more important.
A traditional Kerala meal cooked and served on the houseboat by the boat's own crew — karimeen (pearl spot fish) curry or fry, steamed rice, coconut-based side dishes (thoran), rasam, and a dessert. The menu is based on the day's catch and seasonal availability. Vegetarian options are available on request — mention when booking.
Punnamada Lake is the stretch of Vembanad backwaters immediately adjacent to Alleppey town. It is famous as the venue of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race — Kerala's most celebrated snake boat race, held every August on the second Saturday. Alleppey Kayaking Club's base is in Thathampally, right on the Nehru Trophy Ward, adjacent to Punnamada. The narrow village canals feeding into the lake are where the kayaking session takes place each morning.
Yes — entirely. The Punnamada village canals are calm, shallow and sheltered. No prior kayaking experience needed. Life jackets are provided for all participants for all water activities. The houseboat is a large, stable vessel — very comfortable for young children and older guests. The guide gives a full safety briefing before every water activity and stays alongside the group throughout. The structure of the day — active early, comfortable houseboat mid-day, beach to end — works well for children.
The meeting point is Thathampally, Alappuzha — Alleppey Kayaking Club's base in the Kallupurackal Nehru Trophy Ward. When you book, we send the exact location pin via WhatsApp. Local pickup from your hotel or accommodation in Alleppey can be arranged on request — mention where you are staying when you book and we confirm logistics.
October to February is the peak season — pleasant temperatures, calm backwaters and clear beach weather. November to January is the sweet spot. June to September is monsoon — the backwaters flood into the paddy fields, the canals turn lush and dramatic, and the houseboat experience has a completely different atmosphere. March to May is hot but the backwaters are quieter. We operate year-round and each season offers something genuinely different.
Yes. All packages at Alleppey Kayaking Club are flexible. This 1-day package can be extended with an overnight houseboat stay, a second day at Mararikulam beach, temple sightseeing, a Kerala food trail, or a Kuttanad canoe day. If you are arriving from Kochi Airport or Alleppey Railway Station, we can combine this with our 2-day packages. WhatsApp us with your dates and preferences and we will build a custom itinerary.
