Best Things to Do in Alleppey — From Someone Who Actually Lives Here

Kerala Tourism brochures give you the official list. Rahul gives you the real one — built from years of guiding couples, families and friends through every corner of Alleppey.

🌅
Kayak at sunrise, not noon
The backwater canals at 6 AM are a completely different world from midday. Mist on the water, birds, village sounds, zero crowds. Alleppey Kayaking Club runs their sunrise kayaking tour from 6 AM specifically for this reason — it's the Alleppey that doesn't appear in travel magazines.
Take a shikara, not a houseboat, for 1 day
Houseboats are for overnight stays. For a single day, a shikara gets you deeper into the canals, closer to village life, and costs a fraction of the price. Alleppey Shikara Club is the best operator for this — locally run, small groups, and they know every canal worth exploring. Most guests say it's more memorable than any houseboat.
🏖️
Marari over Alleppey Beach for couples
Alleppey Beach is great for atmosphere and photography. But if you want quiet, palm-fringed sand with almost no crowds, Marari is the one. Go at 4 PM for the best light.
🍛
Eat on the water, not at a tourist restaurant
The best Kerala meal in Alleppey is eaten on a shikara or at a village restaurant by the canal — not a hotel buffet. Karimeen pollichathu fresh from the backwaters is something else entirely.
🛺
Hire a tuk tuk for the whole day, not by the hour
Alleppey's attractions are spread out. A full-day tuk tuk with a local guide who knows the shortcuts and hidden spots is the only way to see everything without stress or negotiation at every stop.
🧵
The Coir Museum is genuinely worth it
Most tourists skip it. Don't. Alleppey built its global reputation on coir and this museum tells that story beautifully. Visit at 2:45 PM when it's quiet — you'll have the place almost to yourself.

When to visit

Best Time to Visit Alleppey

Peak Season
October to May
Cool, dry and clear skies. The backwaters are at their best. This is when we fill up fastest — book 2–3 days in advance if you can. Sunrise kayaking from October through February is especially spectacular.
Monsoon Season
June to July
Alleppey during the monsoon is genuinely magical — green canals, dramatic skies, almost no other tourists. The kayaking is atmospheric in a completely different way. We operate year round.

Staying at a Mararikulam resort? The beach is finest October to May. In Alleppey town? The backwaters are beautiful year round.

The Market Hour

This isn't a shopping stop — it's an hour inside the real Alleppey. Tell us at booking whether you'd like this, or prefer extra beach time instead.

Mullackal Street
The beating heart of local Alleppey. Flower sellers, street chai stalls, vegetable vendors — everyday Kerala life happening all around you.
Kerala Sari Market
Kasavu weaves, block prints, handloom fabrics in every colour. Whether you buy something or just look, this is a cultural experience in itself.
Banana Chips Market
Freshly fried, paper-thin, impossibly crispy. You'll taste six varieties, pick your favourite, and take bags home. Everyone does.

This hour is optional — some guests prefer extra beach time. Just tell us when you book.

Two Museums Worth Your Time

01
Ravi Karunakaran Museum  ·  2:00 PM
A private collection unlike anything else in Alleppey. Antiques, art and Kerala heritage assembled over decades by one of the region's great collectors. We visit at 2 PM when it's quiet and unhurried — the best way to experience it.
02
Coir Museum  ·  2:45 PM
Alleppey built its global reputation on coir. This museum tells that story — hands-on, visual and genuinely fascinating. Kids especially love the working demonstrations. By 3:30 you're on your way to the beach.

3:30 PM onwards

Two Beaches, Two Moods

We position the tuk tuk at whichever beach suits your group — or split time between both. You have until 6:30 PM to use this time exactly as you like.

Alleppey Beach
Fishermen pulling nets. The old pier. The lighthouse in the background. Best for walking, photography and soaking up local energy at golden hour.
Quiet · Palm-fringed
Marari Beach
Almost private-feeling even at peak season. Palm trees, soft sand, the sound of the waves. Where couples sit still and families let kids run free.

Common questions

FAQ

Do you pick up from Mararikulam resorts and Alleppey town hotels?
Yes — both are our primary pickup zones. We also cover Arookutty, Muhamma, Punnamada and all major resort areas across Alleppey. Just WhatsApp us your hotel or resort name when you book and we'll confirm the exact pickup time and location.
Why 5:30 AM? Isn't that very early?
The sunrise kayaking at 6 AM is genuinely the best experience of the day — still water, mist on the canals, complete quiet, no other tourists. Every single guest who groaned about the early start has told us afterward it was their favourite moment. Trust us on this one.
What is the best thing to do in Alleppey for one day?
Honestly, this package. Sunrise kayaking through the narrow canals, a 4-hour shikara with speedboat and village canoeing, local markets, two museums, beach sunset and three Kerala meals — all private, all with a certified local guide. No other operator in Alleppey combines all of this at this price.
Is kayaking suitable for beginners and children?
Absolutely. The canals are calm with no current. Rahul is trained and certified and guides anyone who has never kayaked before. Children from age 6 are perfectly fine. For younger kids, the shikara and speedboat are ideal.
How far in advance should we book?
During peak season (October to May) we recommend booking 2–3 days ahead as daily spots are limited. During off-season you can often book the day before. WhatsApp us your date and we'll tell you immediately if it's available.
How do we arrange the Ayurvedic massage?
Just mention it when you WhatsApp to book. We arrange your slot at our trusted partner spa and build it into the day at 6:30 PM. Couple sessions are available — just let us know your group size and preference.
What should we pack for the day?
Light cotton clothes, sunscreen, a small dry bag for your phone during kayaking, and comfortable walking shoes. We handle everything else — including your photos, all three meals, and all transport throughout the day.
Is Alleppey Kayaking Club the best full-day tour in Alleppey?
We built it to be. 100+ five-star Google reviews, a NIWS-certified local guide born in the backwaters, four different backwater activities in one day, free professional photography, three authentic Kerala meals, direct pickup from Mararikulam resorts and Alleppey hotels — all for ₹1,500 per person. No other operator in Alleppey packages this completely. If you find one that does, we'd genuinely like to know.

"Your resort got you to Alleppey.
We'll show you what it actually is."

Tell us your resort or hotel name, your date, and your group size. We confirm within the hour. No advance payment to enquire.
