Kayak at sunrise, not noon
The backwater canals at 6 AM are a completely different world from midday. Mist on the water, birds, village sounds, zero crowds. Alleppey Kayaking Club runs their sunrise kayaking tour from 6 AM specifically for this reason — it's the Alleppey that doesn't appear in travel magazines.
Take a shikara, not a houseboat, for 1 day
Houseboats are for overnight stays. For a single day, a shikara gets you deeper into the canals, closer to village life, and costs a fraction of the price. Alleppey Shikara Club is the best operator for this — locally run, small groups, and they know every canal worth exploring. Most guests say it's more memorable than any houseboat.
Marari over Alleppey Beach for couples
