Can I Kayak Myself in Alleppey?
Everything a Beginner Needs to Know
Real stories, local secrets, and practical tips from Rahul Raj โ founder of Alleppey Kayaking Club, paddling these canals for over 5 years
The Short Answer: Yes, You Can!
You do not need any prior kayaking experience to kayak in Alleppey. The narrow backwater canals are calm, manageable, and perfect for first-timers. With a licensed guide and a short 10-minute training session, most beginners are paddling confidently within minutes. However, there are a few things only a local guide will warn you about โ and this post covers all of them.
Who Is This Guide For?
My name is Rahul Raj, founder of Alleppey Kayaking Club and a certified kayaking guide from the National Institute of Watersports (NIWS), Goa. I grew up on these backwaters and started this club because I kept watching tourists leave Alleppey having only seen the commercial side โ the crowded houseboats, the tourist-facing canals. After guiding hundreds of first-timers through the Punnamada Canal, Pannackal Canal, Kuttanad Backwaters, and hidden village waterways over the past 5 years, I have seen every kind of beginner mistake. This guide is everything I wish every guest read before stepping into a kayak.
The Biggest Danger No One Talks About
Most blogs will tell you the hardest part is getting in and out of the kayak. That is true โ panicking during entry and exit is the most common mistake beginners make. But after five years on these waters, I want to tell you about a more serious danger that I witness regularly.
"Every week I see the same thing happen. Beginners start kayaking and they feel a rush of excitement. The water is beautiful, the paddle feels easy, and suddenly they are paddling fast โ faster than the group, faster than me. They go straight ahead without waiting. They feel invincible. But Punnamada Lake is not a quiet pond. Houseboats and speedboats are constantly moving through it. A fast, excited beginner on open water without group coordination is in a genuinely dangerous spot. And the worst part? After that burst of excited paddling, they are completely exhausted โ and they still have to kayak back."
The Exhaustion Trap: My #1 Warning for Beginners
Never paddle at full speed in the first 20 minutes. The excitement is real, but you only have a limited amount of energy. Beginners who sprint ahead always struggle to paddle back. Pace yourself, stay with your guide, and always save 40% of your energy for the return journey.
What Happens During Your 10-Minute Training
Before you enter the water, a licensed guide will give you a short but comprehensive training session. Here is exactly what is covered:
Getting In & Out Safely
The kayak can flip if you step in wrong. Your guide will show you the exact technique to board and exit without tipping โ the single most important skill for beginners.
Paddle Grip & Technique
Wrong grip leads to exhaustion within minutes. You will learn the correct angle, hand position, and wrist rotation for efficient, fatigue-free paddling.
Forward, Reverse & Stopping
Three strokes are all you need: forward paddle, reverse paddle, and how to stop. Master these and you can navigate almost any canal confidently.
Wearing Your Life Jacket
A life jacket worn incorrectly is nearly useless. The guide will check and adjust yours personally before you touch the water.

Local Secrets Only a Guide Knows
Alleppey is famous for its backwaters, but the best kayaking spots are not on any tourist map. After 5 years on these waterways, here are my personal favourites:
๐บ๏ธ Hidden Gems of Alleppey Kayaking
The Calm Beginner Stretch โ There is a specific section of the village canals that is completely sheltered from houseboat traffic, with virtually no current. I always start first-timers here to build confidence before moving to busier water.
The Hidden Canal (Local Secret) โ There is a narrow waterway that most tour operators do not take guests through. It is only accessible by kayak โ too narrow for any motorboat. The silence inside is extraordinary.
The Village Life Spot โ One particular bend in the canal passes directly through a traditional fishing village. Early morning, you will see locals washing, fishing, and starting their day โ completely unfiltered local life that no houseboat can access.
The Narrow Canal with Stunning Views โ A stretch where the canal is so narrow that the coconut palms on both sides form a complete green tunnel overhead. The light filtering through at 7 AM is unlike anything else in Kerala.

How to Stay Safe Around Boat Traffic
The Punnamada Lake and main canals see regular houseboat and speedboat traffic. As a beginner, this is something you must take seriously. Here is exactly what I tell every guest before entering open water:
Never Paddle Ahead of the Guide
Your guide knows where boats are coming from and when to cross. If you paddle ahead on open water, you lose that protection. Always stay within the guide's line of sight.
Stay as a Group
A group of kayaks is much more visible to boat operators than a single kayak. Never separate from your group, especially on the wider lake stretches.
Expect Wake Waves
When a houseboat passes, it creates waves. Paddle into the wave at a slight angle โ never let it hit you side-on. Your guide will warn you before each boat passes.
